It’s been a while!

Hello Critical Thinkers,
First, before I get into the news, I must apologize for the lapse in updating the SIG with what is happening. That being said, luckily, there have not been any big emergencies or last minute things to share with you! Whew!

Second, I would like to remind you that we are still accepting manuscripts for the CTLL, Volume 4! If you have methodology, research, opinions, or book reviews you would like to share, please send us your manuscript to: editor@jaltcriticalthinking.org

It has been a busy spring break and many things have been happening behind the scenes of the CT SIG. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know of the upcoming events, some submission deadlines, and the things we hope to achieve this year with your CT SIG.

Next month: Akita!

PanSIG 2017 – The CT SIG will have their PanSIG Forum on May 21st, Sunday morning at 9am in room D-104.  Make sure to not drink too much on Saturday so you can join us for six great presentations that are going to be useful for you to take home new ideas on utilizing Critical Thinking in your classes. Presenters, Yumi Chikamori, Wayne Devitte, David Gann, James Dunn, Hiroshi Nakagawa, and Adam Gyenes will be sharing their experiences in the classroom with you!

June: Sapporo!

Hokkaido Chapter, GILE SIG, and CT SIG will be holding a joint event on June 18th in Sapporo! If you are near, you should come by and meet up with some of our presenters! Jennie Roloff-Rothman, Glen Hill, and Robert Ashcroft will be representing the CT SIG with their presentations at this great event. Your Coordinator, James Dunn will be participating in a panel discussion on the purposes of our SIGs and what JALT’s SIGs can do for you. Join us on the 18th! We will be sharing a link to the event with you soon.

September: Tokyo!

The BRAIN SIG and CT SIG team up with the Tokyo Chapter to hold what we think is going to be one of the best one-day events in the history of JALT! Two of the hottest areas of language learning theory, research, and methodology right now are joining forces and it is going to be a blast! We are looking for presenters for this event, so if you are interested in this great opportunity to present in Tokyo, please contact our program chair: Wayne Devitte at : program@jaltcriticalthinking.org (Make sure your subject line reads: Tokyo Event Submission. Also make sure to include your name, affiliation, a title (max 10 words), an abstract (max 150 words), and a short bio (max 50 words). )

October: Sendai!

If you have been to one of the last three JALT CT SIG rooms at the ETJ Expo in Sendai, you know that it is a great event that features a truly excellent audience (with great attendance!) who eagerly eat up Critical Thinking methodology, opinions, and research. Submission deadline (tentative) is July 31st. We are looking for presenters for this event, so if you are interested in this great opportunity to present in Sendai, please contact our program chair: Wayne Devitte at : program@jaltcriticalthinking.org (Make sure your subject line reads: Sendai Event Submission. November: JALT 2017!

The results of the JALT 2017 individual submissions might not be in yet, but the CT SIG Forum’s presenters have been decided! We will be sharing more information about this event as the date draws nearer.

December: Kyoto!

We will be looking for 3 presenters in or near Kyoto to help represent the JALT CT SIG. We do not have a date yet, but I believe the feeling is early in the month. We don’t have a deadline set yet, but you can go ahead and submit your abstract right now! Finally: CTLL!

I would like to say again that the peer-reviewed journal of the Critical Thinking SIG is going strong and we want to publish YOU! So, if you have a paper (APA format please) that you would like to get out to thousands readers (The latest download count from our online version is a little over 2,000!), get your paper to us! The deadline for submissions is the end of June. Make sure you get your manuscript to us at: editor@jaltcriticalthinking.org.

Word limit is around 3,000 words, but we can be flexible for outstanding papers. You can write on methodology, research, book reviews, and even opinions on what is happening in the the Language Learning area that concerns Critical Thinking! We want to help you share your ideas and develop professionally. So, send us your paper soon so we can get it peer-reviewed!

Finished!

If you are still reading, THANKS! This has been a long post, and for that, I apologize. But this year is shaping up to be a great year. We hope you join us at our events and help us make this group even better than it already is.

Critically yours,

James D. Dunn – Coordinator of the JALT Critical Thinking SIG
